Renting guide

Requesting permission for a pet.

A tenant can make a written request. Give enough information for the landlord to consider it fairly.

What to include

  • The animal type and number.
  • Breed, age and size.
  • Temperament and training.
  • Care arrangements.
  • Relevant references.

Make the request in writing

Existing and prospective tenants can ask to keep a pet. The landlord must consider a written request and cannot refuse without a fair reason, but suitability can depend on the property, animal, lease restrictions, allergies, safety and welfare.

Ask for permission

Wait for a written response

Do not bring an animal into the property until permission has been confirmed. If permission is granted, comply with reasonable written conditions and remain responsible for damage, nuisance and animal welfare.

Official guidance

Read the government guide to pet requests.
